Optimize the performance of SCR systems through simulations

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is widely used within industry to help meet the challenging Nitric Oxide (NOx) emission requirements for diesel engines. There are a number of important criteria necessary for designing an efficient SCR system, including fast mixing of the urea-water spray with the exhaust gases and high ammonia uniformity at the SCR device.

However, one problem that threatens the life and performance of the system is solid urea deposit formations. The deposits can generate backpressure and material deterioration, causing decreases in both engine and emission performance of the SCR device.

The use of simulation to optimize the design of SCR devices allows engineers to improve NOx and deposit reduction, a necessity for complying with emission standards.

Presenters will demonstrate how CFD enables engineers to better understand the complex interactions between the gas-liquid phase, the turbulent flow field, the hot surfaces of the exhaust system, and the impact on deposit formation.
