LES Prediction of Noise Emission from Turbulent Free-Shear-Flow

Free shear turbulent noise is prevalent in many engineering applications. Study of the noise generation mechanism in such flows using DNS is not computationally realistic. LES, however, offers a significantly less expensive solution while maintaining similar modelling capability as that of DNS. The classical test case chosen for this study is a generic Mach 0.75 round jet flow. This study focuses on investigating the roles of shear layer instabilities and large scale coherent structures in free shear flow aeroacoustics. Inflow conditions were treated in this study to provide a realistic yet numerically inexpensive manipulation of the shear layer behavior and the respective sound pressure levels were computed using both direct pressure measurement and Fw-H acoustic propagation model.
