Applications of Overset Mesh Technique for the Marine Industry

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

Overset mesh technique in STAR-CCM+® has proved to be a valuable tool for the marine industry. Examples of applications will be presented, such as ship resistance in calm water, added resistance and motions in waves, accelerations and structural loads on free-falling lifeboats in design sea states, and also tidal turbines.

Recent developments involving several floating bodies, contact prevention and zero gap, have made new applications possible. With respect to free-falling lifeboats, cfd simulations can start from when the lifeboat is released on the skid, allowing for full interaction between the lifeboat and the host. Another example is a floating dock, consisting of closely connected modules
