Thermal Management of a Li-ion Battery in a Hybrid Passenger Car within the Development Process

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

First, the computational activities for the thermal management of electronic devices in the development process of a passenger car are presented. The numerical challenges related to the temperature computation of a refrigerant cooled battery and related to its temperature control are reviewed. In this respect, a conjugate heat transfer model has been created in STAR-CCM+.

The comparison with experimental results shows a good agreement for the temperature of the cell can. The battery temperature is computed in transient conditions under vehicle electrical and thermal loads. Finally, the effect of the vehicle ambient conditions on the battery cells' temperature is shown for critical use cases.
