Streamlining Aircraft Icing Simulations

Aircraft icing is a major concern in aircraft development because it can degrade aerodynamic and engine performance, produce false indications on flight instruments, and prevent correct operation of control surfaces, landing gear, and brakes. This presentation will discuss simulation of aircraft icing topics, from design of thermal ice protection systems to prediction of accreted ice shapes and performance degradation. Various challenges, modeling approaches, and results will be presented. Historically, such simulations have been rather segmented, with much time and effort spent passing information between various narrowly-focused codes. STAR-CCM+ version 9.02 introduces the Dispersed Multiphase (DMP) model, and now allows modeling anti-icing systems and ice accretion in a single tool with fully-coupled physics and a consistent CAD-to-solution process.
