Simulation of VAWT for wake effects

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

The current study is dedicated to understanding the wake effects of rotating vertical axis wind turbine. It is achieved by using STAR-CCM+ on the HPC clusters at Cranfield University.

A number of tools in STAR-CCM+ are applied, including the wake refinement technology, morphing motion and the rigid body motion, and different turbulence models are also employed. Results from different physics models and mesh schemes are compared. The blade force prediction shows very good agreement with the measurement.

This initial wake study has provided a basis for the structural analysis of the vertical axis wind turbine, and reconstructed the environment of the original testing. The wide range of turbulent models make it possible to assess the performance of different turbulent models in such application.
