Improved Vehicle Fuel Economy Through Optimization

With more strict regulations on reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, reducing energy use of the vehicle becomes critical. Part of the energy consumption is due to efficiency losses from the engine, and cooling system. At high speed, a large portion of energy loss is related to the aerodynamic drag of the vehicle. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate a method to reduce energy consumption of the vehicle using a commercial optimization package. The optimization looks at different grill angles, grill opening, bumper opening, fan size, and fan RPM on a simplified vehicle to demonstrate the procedure. The optimization algorithm quickly found improved designs within 50 runs providing quick information showing improved drag and cooling air flow.
